About Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is one of the largest and most comprehensive academic health sciences centres in Canada. It is a tertiary and quaternary multi-specialty referral centre for Ontario, Canada’s most populous province with an area of over 1,000,000 square kilometers and more than 13,000,000 people.  Sunnybrook has an annual operating and research budget of $1B CAD, over 10,000 staff, physicians and volunteers, 1,275 clinician-scientists and research staff, over 1,200 beds, and has more than 1.2 million patient visits a year.

Over the past 60 years, the hospital has evolved from its original role as a veterans’ hospital into a Centre of Excellence in clinical care, education and research.  Today, Sunnybrook has eight leading clinical programs: Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care Program; the Odette Cancer Centre and Cancer Program; the Musculoskeletal Program; the Schulich Heart Centre; the St. John’s Rehab Program; the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program (including Mental Health); the Women & Babies Program; and the Veterans and Community Program - all of which are fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, provide high quality care, cutting-edge education and training, and conduct breakthrough research that invents the future of healthcare.

Sunnybrook is fully affiliated with the University of Toronto, a world-renowned research university located in Ontario, Canada. Founded in 1827, the University of Toronto is the birthplace of insulin and stem cell research; and is ranked as the nation’s top medical-doctoral university. Many of Sunnybrook’s physicians and clinical staff have cross-appointments to faculty and supervisory positions in the Faculty of Medicine and other departments at the University of Toronto.

Sunnybrook provides in-hospital and simulation-based learning opportunities for more than 4,000 students annually in over 28 disciplines.  Our physicians are certified by either the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada and are cross-appointed with the University of Toronto. In addition to deep ties with the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine, our physicians also bring expertise in national education, examinations and accreditation through their involvement with the two colleges.

About the Sunnybrook Women & Babies Program

Sunnybrook’s Women & Babies Program facility is one of the most innovative, modern, and family-centered spaces for high-risk birthing and maternal care in Canada. The program is currently able to accommodate over 4,000 births each year. The Women & Babies Program specializes in patient care for the period around the time of birth, including labour and delivery as well as the care of newborn babies. The Program utilizes advanced techniques such as laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of endometriosis, urinary incontinence, urogynaecology issues and fibroids, ovarian and cervical cancers, infertility, and conditions relating to mature women's health. The Program provides high quality, individualized care to women and their families across all levels of risk.

Countless lives have been transformed by the internationally relevant advances in medical science that Sunnybrook researchers have made. In 2000 Sunnybrook, with collaborators at the University Health Network and Osaka University in Japan, discovered a protein in human breast milk that stimulates the immune system of newborns. In 2001, Sunnybrook led the first, international multicenter clinical trial to evaluate risks and benefits of caesarian and vaginal birth for breech pregnancies. The practice changing results showed C-sections for breech pregnancies offer benefits for mother and child.

Sunnybrook’s clinics focus on needs of women with medical disorders, diabetes, hypertension and hematologic disorders. The Colposcopy Clinic is home to a unique colposcopy unit where research and education in the prevention, early detection and treatment of cervical cancer takes place. The Pessary Clinic provides education and services related to incontinence, prolapse, pessary fitting, counseling and conservative management of urinary incontinence.

We have a multi-disciplinary program to treat couples with either female and/or male factor infertility using state-of-the-art technology to achieve some of the highest IVF pregnancy rates in the world.

The Women & Babies Program is unique and dynamic in its ability to provide the following services:

· 20 private labour and delivery suites

· 3 operative birthing suites

· A calm and nurturing environment to minimize patient stress

· Birthing suites where labour, delivery and recovery occur all in one room

· Largest breastfeeding clinic in Canada

· Increased security measures, including security anklets for neonatal

· Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) equipped with 48 spacious and private patient rooms

· Neonatal follow-up clinic assessing development of babies born at less than 30 weeks

· Spaces for parents to rest and gather

· Private and secure access for all NICU families to their baby's space
